Anya Savina: Yet another vibe shift with Sean Monahan. This week, I got a chance to chat with writer and K-HOLE co-founder Sean Monahan about his latest trend report for 8Ball, Live Players. ((2023-11-30) Monahan Live Players) (more)

Joe Procopio: This Is the Number 1 Tech Skill You Need to Compete Right Now. I know that there are already a million articles loudly uncovering the one true tech skill necessary to survive the AI job-cut reckoning (more)

Allison Davis: A Vibe Shift Is Coming. ...my friend Ellen messaged me: “Okay, please let me know if this person is dumb. But this stressed me out this morning.” She dropped a link to something titled “Vibe Shift,” an entry from a Substack called 8Ball, which turned out to be the weekly newsletter of a trend-forecasting consultancy founded by Sean Monahan. Previously, Monahan had helped found the now-defunct art collective K-HOLE (more)

TheNeed for Chaos” and Motivations to Share Hostile Political Rumors. Social media provide citizens with power to craft and share news with each other. Unfortunately, this technological transformation has made it easier than before to spread what we call hostile political rumors in a way that goes “farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than truth” (more)

Florian U. Jehn: What factors allow societies to survive a crisis? This post is part of a living literature review on societal collapse. You can find an indexed archive here.... From time to time you come across a paper that blows you away with the amount of work it must have needed to create it and the fascinating insights that can be gleaned from it. For me the preprint “All Crises are Unhappy in their Own Way: The role of societal instability in shaping the past” by Daniel Hoyer et al. (2024) is such a piece of work. They have built a new dataset on top of the Seshat history database (Turchin et al., 2019) (1). Their new data is meant to capture the majority of big crises from the beginning of recorded history until around the beginning of the 20th century (more)

Jason Smith on Polycrisis, complex systems and trust. Daniel Drezner mentioned complex systems in his article on “polycrisis” so that makes it relevant for me to talk about — after all, the raison d'être of information equilibrium is to provide tractable ways to take on complex systems. (more)

In metal typesetting, a font (American English) or fount (Commonwealth English) is a particular size, weight and style of a typeface, defined as the set of fonts that share an overall design. For instance, the typeface Bauer Bodoni (shown in the figure) includes fonts "Roman" (or "regular"), "bold" and "italic"; each of these exists in a variety of sizes. In the digital description of fonts (computer fonts), the terms "font" and "typeface" are often used interchangeably.[1] For example, when used in computers, each style is stored in a separate digital font file. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Font (more)
